The Real Beginning

Posted on

To make a long story

(Ninety more NICU days, 4 more extubation attempts [including 2 more self extubations – yes – really – even with all of the tape that they used to keep in in place – and the sedatives], a cricoid split surgery [in attempt to expand Audrianna’s trachea], laser surgery [in attempt to reduce swelling],  and one very difficult week with no progress on the high flow nasal cannula [with severe stridor])

Audrianna ended up with a trach…..

And…..although I have already written about the beginning…and another beginning…I think that this is truly the real beginning of Audrianna’s story…..

Look again at her face…..in the picture above….

She was happy…..

For the very first time….she wasn’t struggling…..to breathe….

And so…..she wasn’t agitated anymore…..she wasn’t difficult to console anymore….she didn’t need constant sedation anymore…..she wasn’t restless anymore…..she wasn’t

She just was…….Audrianna……for the first time……

And so, even though this journey hasn’t been easy….

Spoiler Alert: She just turned 2 and she still has a trach

We would make the same decision a thousand times over…..

Because

In the end….the trach didn’t just save her life…..it is helping her to live the life that we always  imagined….
